A Bit of Hopecore and the Nature of Love: Reflecting on a Long Week

A Bit of Hopecore and the Nature of Love: Reflecting on a Long Week

There was a fact making the rounds on TikTok recently about pigs that stuck with me. Apparently, the anatomy of pigs is such that they can’t see the sky. Their necks and spines are designed to keep their heads down, focused on foraging for food. If you’ve ever watched truffle hunting videos, you’ll know how incredible pigs are at this— their sense of smell is far superior to ours, even better than dogs, allowing them to find exactly what they’re looking for. But the things we value as humans, like gazing up at the stars, are beyond the pigs' understanding. They simply have no concept of looking up at the night sky.

It’s been a long week for many of us, and I think we’ve all turned to comfort content in a way we haven’t in quite a while. One of my best friends loves watching romantic comedies, and I absolutely adore this about her. She gets into her pajamas, makes a cup of tea, pops some popcorn, and curls up with her partner to watch silly movies about people falling in love and making grand, romantic gestures. She cries, her partner cries, and they cry together. It’s cathartic, beautiful, and so deeply comforting.

I’ve been finding my own version of this kind of comfort this week. As I’ve been thinking about those pigs— the ones who’ll never see the stars— I’m reminded of how people, upon realizing this, were so moved that they took the pigs and tilted them toward the sky. The pigs, confused and maybe a little scared, screamed at first. But then, some of them went quiet. In my mind, though, I like to think that one of them was simply taking it all in— seeing the sky for the first time, maybe even amazed by it.

Regardless of what the pig was actually thinking (and yes, I do think it was thinking something— pigs are incredibly intelligent!), I can’t get the image out of my head: a pig, eyes wide with wonder, staring up at the stars. It’s a simple, beautiful act of love— to share something so breathtaking, so beautiful, with someone you care about. Whether it’s with people, pets, or pigs, sharing beauty is a way of showing love.

I started a new sketchbook and ponder what to fill that terrifying first page with, all I can think of is that image of a pig with stars in his eyes. It’s become my own small, comforting thought for the week.

So, as we all continue to seek comfort in different ways, I hope that you’re able to share a small act of love with those who bring you comfort. Whether it’s a sweet treat, a thoughtful note, or a kind gesture— now is the time to lean on each other. We all need to remember that we’ll get through whatever comes next by offering support and care. Whether it’s bringing meals to friends who are sick, offering comfort to those who are hurting, or sharing our art and love with the world— these acts of love matter.

This week, I encourage you to find your version of bringing the stars to someone. Share that little bit of joy. Share the beauty in life with someone you love. The world needs it now more than ever.

As you reflect on the beauty of small, loving gestures, why not share a bit of that comfort with someone special? Whether it’s for a partner, a friend, or anyone who could use a reminder of how much they’re cared for, this card captures the simple, breathtaking act of sharing beauty with those we love.
